AX-1 Tips & Downloads

Ax-1 Compatible parts from  other Motor Bikes

While it is always better to use the OEM parts , we might have to consider alternative parts sometimes for various reasons. Specially the Ax-1 genuine parts  are very rare to find and #king expensive.  Please comment if you have anything to add here.

Here are some non-harmful alternatives  to some frequently sought after Honda Ax-1 parts.

  1. Starter Motor Brushes : GS125 , GN ( ~Rs 1000)
  2. Oil Filter : Bajaj Boxer   ( Rs 150 ) , FZ150 (Rs  300)
  3. Speedo Meter Cable : CD125 twin ( ~ Rs 160.00)
A cable sold Panchikawatta was told to be Rs 2000!!!! which good old CD125 cable with outer just costs Rs 160 and works perfectly.

There are few best practices for AX-1 I found over the internet and few from my own experience. I welcome any additions from readers. Thanks

Best Practices

  1. Always start with full choke when cold starting. ( e.g first run of the day / in the morning etc)
When cold starting, I pull the choke fully and press the starter button and hold it until the engine starts. Premature release of starter motor will cause the engine to flood!
After it fires up I keep the choke on for 2 minutes and release it half way back and let the engine run 1 more minute. then its ready to roll.! After the warmup routine the engine should idle around 1300-1500 RPM stably.
  2. Don’t start your AX-1 to fetch bread from  the bakery which is just 200m away!!!! 🙂
The starter motor and related components are very expensive and hard to find. If you burn your motor or starter clutch or any of the gear wheels , be prepared to spend like Rs 25000! When I bought my AX-1 , starter motor was busted with its gears and it cost me over 25000 and few full days of loitering in Panchikawaththa.
Other thing is as AX-1 is water cooled, its not fuel efficient until its properly warmed up.  So think again about starting your bike for a 2 minute ride!
  3. Keep the chain well lubricated and properly tensioned as AX-1 has a name for fast wear out of chain and sprockets!will be adding more when time permits
  4. Go soft on launches , this will save tires, chain sprockets and many other ralated parts which have very short life span otherwise.

Engine Oil for Honda AX-1 :  SAE 20W – 50W

    • Hi Asanka,

AX-1 Radiators rarely needs replacements, take it to a good mechanic, im sure it can be fixed easily,
if it heats too much , chances are thermostat not working or fan not working or slow which can be fixed easily too.

      • Thanks for replying Amila..
which model sparking plug should i install and i need to replace both Tires
tell me what is the best and suitable tire for my bike in Sri Lankan market.

      • Bro, sorry for the late reply, Original tyres are the best for ax-1. all other tyres can not give you the full fun which ax-1 has to offer.

  3. Hi,,,this is a great site to discover…I have found a AX1 honda 250 1992…it is in piecses and sees all there…I am told it does not run…I can buy it from the owner for (cheap)…but not sure if it is worth restoring..can anyone tell me where to get things like a new tank /carburetor and Honda stickers…might need CDI also..I am in Dublin/Ireland…………..

  4. Hello every one…first of all I must say this site is a God send.. I bought a AX 1 2004 and it was working fine until yesterday. (Although it had few defects).

1)My RPM was not working no I took it part and just checked and the meter unit seems to work ok. So I assumed the fault is with the circuit or the line from the CDI. how ever when I plugged it back something happened. The CDI and the Ignition Coil got fried. :(.. I was able to find a coil and this site helped me a lot to know many things about AX 1. I am grateful for the author of this blog for that. I read there was a comment that they repair CDI or is there a good chance to swap for a loncin CDI. if so where I can buy one ? once again thank you very much guys. Your help is really appreciated.

  5. Hi there, I am living in Cambodia and am in Vietnam… My bike is back there… I wonder waht is the voltage on the battery? 6 or 12v?
